Sony Ericsson Aino, the PSP Phone. Leaked Pictures, Info and Review

Sony Ericsson today unveiled a couple of prototypes alongside the Idou -- sorry, Satio -- including a phone that points the way towards a possible PSP phone. The Sony Ericsson Aino -- Aino being a character in Finnish mythology whose name means 'only', myth fans -- beams your PlayStation 3 content direct to you wherever you are. Wowzers!

The Aino boasts an 8-megapixel camera and comes with a wireless dock and headphones. It will sync with your PC over Wi-Fi or 3G, and features a Bluetooth headset, all straight out of the box.

But what's really rocking our socks is the fact that the Aino can connect wirelessly to PS3 from anywhere in the world. From your living room to Timbuktu, if you have digital content -- TV shows, films or music -- on your PS3, then you can access it through your Aino*. You can't play games, sadly, but you can -- get this -- switch your PS3 on and off. Magic.

Is Bing going to replace Google?

Bing.com has gone live earlier than expected, but it's still in beta and still in pieces: it takes a little jiggery-pokery with your location to access several features. Clever features, granted, but quite a few of them look suspiciously familiar.

Change your location (in the top right) to the US and you'll suddenly get access to more features, such as improved shopping and travel options. Done that? Right then, dive in. There's plenty to like: it's handy having our search history listing down the left-hand side, and we were looking forward to being able to hover over a link and get a preview.

Only now we discover that preview is a just a small text box, with little in the way of context. We've seen the idea of previews implemented elsewhere much better, and it got us thinking we've seen a few of Bing's features before -- but does Bing do them better?

Mouseover link previews: CoolPreviews

Bing's small text boxes aren't a patch on the full-sized previews afforded by Firefox extensionCoolPreviews. Hover over any link and you get a preview box complete with images, on any site -- not just search-engine results.

Cashback: Quidco

Bing cashback allows you to search for products and, if you purchase them through an eligible retailer, claim cashback. It's a similar setup to Quidco, albeit without the £5 annual charge.

Hover over certain points in Bing's home page wallpaper, and small clear squares will appear, each of which pops up a text note. Just like Flickr. Each includes a link to a relevant Bing search: today's image, of hot-air balloons over Cappadocia, Turkey, includes history, geography and news* for the area, and even links to trying out your own hot-air balloon ride.

*With exquisite irony, the top news hit is 'Cappadocia balloon crash may have been caused by pressure from tourist trade'.

Shopping: Ciao

One of the much-trumpeted aspects of Bing was its integration with other services. Disappointingly, the integration currently amounts to bodily picking you up and shifting you over to that service. The shopping tab simply shunts you to Ciao. The maps tab takes you to Multimap. To return to Bing, you have to click the back button.

That's not integration in our book, and there's no sense that you're drawing on the entire Web, just Microsoft's corners of it. Incidentally, Multimap couldn't find Wembley Stadium even when we gave it the address.

Pretty much everything else: Google

Searching for a particular type of service, like for example a tapas restaurant in London, Bing gave us first a shortlist of individual tapas restaurants, with phone numbers, all shown on a thumbnail map. That was followed by links to listings sites, some of which were the entry for a specific eatery with tapas in its name, and others with general guides to tapas restaurants. In other words, exactly what Google does.

The fancy wallpapered home page may be a million miles from Google's famously minimal design, but that's not the case with the results. Where are the categorised links? Where's the revolutionary new paradigm in search-result organisation? Once we'd hit search we were hard-pressed to tell the difference. Sponsored results in a pale yellow box at the top? Check. A list of blue results with green links underneath? Check. Ad links on the right? Check. Web, images, videos, maps and more in text tabs at the top? Check, check, checkity-check check.

Conclusion: Bada-Bing?

All this said, Bing is still in beta. There's a fistful of good ideas here, no matter where they're borrowed from. The concept of a search engine that pulls together features previously scattered around services and sites is an enticing one, and Crave is definitely going to watch with interest.

Sony PSP Go Review, Leaked Info, and Everything you need to know...

Details of Sony's new PSP Go have leaked ahead of the company's Tuesday press conference at E3 in a big way, with press shots appearing on gaming site Eurogamer and a video from PlayStation Network show Qore on YouTube. And while we don't yet have a comprehensive list of the new PSP's feature list, the leaked info gives us a pretty good idea of what we can expect -- including hints of several new games.

The leaked video is embedded below. Host Veronica Belmont (formerly of this parish) talks to John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America, about the new portable console. (Note: The audio is out of sync and exhibits a buzz, but it's watchable enough -- though we wouldn't be surprised to see it pulled off YouTube soon.)

From the video, here's what we can glean so far:

Form factor: The PSP Go has a 97mm (3.8-inch) wide screen (versus 109mm (4.3 inches) on all previous PSP models). It's said to be 43 per cent lighter than the current PSP 3000, which means it would tip the scales at about 110g. The PSP Go design is very reminiscent of the Sony Mylo -- the screen slides up to reveal the controls.

Storage: The Go will offer 16GB of built-in flash memory, and it's expandable via a Memory Stick Micro slot. There's no UMD (Universal Media Disc) drive. While that no doubt allows for the smaller size (and, we hope, the potential for better battery life), it also means there's no way to play existing PSP software you might own.

Controls: While the layout may be different, the control scheme on the Go looks to be little changed from earlier PSP models: a four-way d-pad on the left, the standard quartet of geometrically coded Sony controls (circle, square, cross, triangle) on the right, select/start buttons in the centre, and the PlayStation 'home' button to the left of the screen.

A second analogue control is always at or near the top of wish lists for PSP redesigns, so its absence is all but certain to get a thumbs-down from gamers. The single stick's placement -- closer to the centre of the control deck rather than the outside right, where it sits on earlier PSPs -- could also be problematic. (That said, the Go control layout is more closely aligned to that of a traditional full-size PlayStation controller.)

None of the leaked info mentions touchscreen support, leading us to assume the feature is not present.

Wireless: In addition to certain Wi-Fi support, the Go adds Bluetooth capability for the first time. In addition to support for standard Bluetooth headsets (and, presumably, A2DP headphones and speakers), Sony exec Koller also specifies the ability to tether the PSP Go to a Bluetooth-enabled phone. The advantage of that isn't highlighted, but that would potentially allow Web browsing and online gaming via a tethered phone with a 3G data connection (when Wi-Fi access wasn't available).

Games: On the leaked Qore video, Koller specifically mentions PSP versions of Little Big Planet, Jak and Daxter, Gran Turismo, and "a new Metal Gear Solid". Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier had been previously announced and a PSP Gran Turismo was originally shown off way back at E3 2004. A PSP-optimised LBP has been all but confirmed, and a new MGS game will be welcomed with open arms (assuming it's more like the action-packed Portable Ops and less like the bizarre Metal Gear Acid).

Koller also emphasises casual games in the interview, implying that Sony would like to see the PSP platform become home to shorter, simpler 'pick up and play' games that can be downloaded from the PlayStation Store on a whim.

As for the downloadable titles: a wide selection already exists on the PlayStation Store for existing PSP owners, and it's long been clear that Sony has been moving away from UMD. The recent high-profilePatapon 2, for instance, is download-only.

Digital media support: Presumably, the Go will have at least the same baseline media features as the existing PSP models, which includes ample support for music, video and photo files. Koller also mentions downloadable movies and TV shows (already available for purchase from Sony's existing iTunes-like PlayStation Store). Despite rumours of a downloadable music store, an online music option is notably not mentioned.

PS3 integration: Again, it appears that the existing interoperability between the PS3 and the PSP line will be carried over to the PSP Go. That includes the ability to cross-load some games and media, as well as the Remote Play option, which lets you access PS3-based content from the PSP over the Internet.

Price and availability: Koller says that it's coming this autumn; price isn't specified. He also confirms that the PSP 3000 will stay on the market. That, at least, is comfort for those of us who like to buy cheap used UMD-based PSP games, which are widely available.

Final thought: It's worth pointing out that the earlier leaks on this product -- right down to the name -- have been remarkably accurate.

Update: All these details having been leaked, the only real news on the PSP Go from Sony's E3 press conference was price and release dates. The Go will launch in Europe and America on 1 October for €249 (£215). A specific UK price was not announced. Here's our video of the announcement:

Palm Pre and apple iTunes?

Palm's executive chairman is Jon Rubinstein, once head of hardware engineering at Apple. And it just so happens that the Palm Pre -- his currently gestating baby boy -- knows exactly how to sync with iTunes, and the code that tricks iTunes into thinking the phone is an iPod is built right into its firmware. No user hacks, no extra software needed.

Apple won't be pleased. At the All Things Digital D7 conference this week, Rubinstein demonstrated the iTunes syncing ability on stage with the Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg. Walt asked how he thought Apple would feel about Palm using iTunes, to which Rubinstein claimed Apple is "practically a monopolist" and that people should be able to use music they pay for in any way they like.

Fair enough. They can do that easily, however, by dragging and dropping their DRM-free music from anywhere on their computer to any supported device. Palm doesn't need to use iTunes at all, and Rubinstein's claim, while admirable in its fair-use sentiments, is flawed for this reason.

Incidentally, your efforts will be scuppered if you try and sync the legacy DRMed iTunes music downloads, because the Pre can't break Apple's DRM. Upgrading these files to iTunes Plus is essential, although any music bought from now on should work fine.

It's not the first time MP3 players have worked with iTunes. You may not have heard of them, but Oakley'sThump Pro sunglasses, from all the way back in 2005, allowed you to manage their musical content with Apple's software. There has also been numerous ways to hack iTunes to work with non-Apple MP3 players.

We contacted Apple for a comment, but it has yet to respond.

Palm Pre in UK. Services, Specs, Detail of realse and More...

The Guardian reports that O2 is dancing the happy dance after scoring the exclusive rights to the Palm Pre, fending off rivals such as Orange and T-Mobile in a wedding-bouquet-style catfight over the hotly anticipated mobile phone.

No doubt O2 is hoping the Pre will help it keep the early adopters it won with its exclusive deal to push the the iPhone, which could soon be set free from its exclusivity chains in the UK and be available on other networks.

The Pre could also tempt Apple-haters, who have hailed the Pre as their touchscreen saviour, to move over to the bubbly blue network. As a mixed crowd of iPhone lovers and loathers alike, we chatted about our pre-Pre anxiety in last week's CNET UK podcast.

O2 wouldn't comment on the deal, calling it "rumour and speculation".

What is it: Touchscreen webOS phone with slide-out keyboard

What we think: It's not without its flaws, but, thanks to the solid webOS platform, the Pre is a worthy rival to the iPhone

We like:

Unparalleled multitasking capabilities and notifications system; vibrant display; multitouch functionality; solid Web browser; good multimedia integration; impressive call quality; good range of wireless options, including 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS

We don't like:

Cramped keyboard; short battery life; can be sluggish at times; no memory-expansion slot; no video-recording capabilities; no onscreen keyboard; no Flash support; Palm App Catalog is still in beta, with a limited number of titles

Judgement:

Despite some missing features, and performance issues that make it less than ideal for on-the-go professionals, the Palm Pre offers gadget lovers and consumers well-integrated features and unparalleled multitasking capabilities. The hardware could be better, but, more importantly, Palm has developed a solid operating system that not only rivals the competition but also sets a new standard in the way smart phones handle tasks and manage information

iPhone 3G S, The Secret 1 Month Contract!!!

We're going to tell you how to get a significantly better deal on an iPhone 3G S, without tying youself down to any more than a one-month O2 contract if you don't want to. And you get hundreds of extra texts and minutes, too.

First, some background. The outrage over the new model's sky-high prices prompted many of you tovehemently berate O2 and Apple in the comments of our stories yesterday. For the shortest contractterm of 18 months, and on the lowest-cost contract of £29.38 per month, the lowest-capacity iPhone 3G S will cost you an enormous £184.98, while the 32GB version will set you back a staggering £274.23.

Worse still, for all that, you still only get a pathetic 75 inclusive minutes, and 125 texts each month. No, we're not kidding, and they aren't typos.

If you can be persuaded into signing up to a two-year contract, the least you can pay per month is £34.26 -- a total of £822.24 over the length of the contract -- and the 16GB model will still set you back £87.11 when you sign up, or £175.19 if you choose the 32GB version. For this you get a decent 600 minutes, but a poor 500 texts.

So how do you get a better deal? If you can afford to stump up for the £440 pay and go iPhone, you can sign up for O2's Simplicity contract. This is a SIM-only plan, with just a one-month or 12-month contract period, and we can confirm this can be put in your pay and go iPhone. Plus, you could get hundreds and hundreds of extra texts and minutes. Here's how it breaks down:

Pay and go 16GB iPhone with 12-month Simplicity plan versus 24-month contract iPhone

12-month contract (instead of 24-month)
800 minutes (instead of 600)
1,600 texts (instead of 500)
Unlimited Web via inclusive bolt-on (same as contract iPhone)

Over 24 months, this will cost you just 97 pence more than getting the iPhone 3G S on a 24-month contract. You get significantly more minutes and texts, as you can see, and just a 12-month or one-month contract. You could even sell the phone should a better model come out in 12 months' time.

To get specific, the 16GB pay and go iPhone 3G S will cost you £440.40 up front. Then, sign up for the £19.58 per month Simplicity plan (one-month and 12-month contracts cost the same, though the former gets you fewer texts and minutes), which will cost you £469.92 over 24 months (should you use it for that long). In total, this will cost you £910.32 over two years, and you could sell the phone 12 months down the line and get some of this money back.

In contrast, the 16GB iPhone 3G S on a 24-month contract at £34.26 per month, will cost you £822.24 over two years, plus the initial £87.11 cost of the phone. In total, that's £909.35. Technically 97 pence less expensive than the pay and go method, but with significantly fewer inclusive minutes and texts, and a two-year contract to be tied into.

We have confirmed this with O2, and this is a legitimate process that will work without problem. Note, however, that you won't get visual voicemail as included on the contract iPhone 3G S, and you won't get unlimited Wi-Fi at hotspots in hotels and airports.

So, a better deal? It seems so. And truth be told, we're going to be going Simplicity as a result of researching this story. Will you? Let us know in the comments below.

We like:

The iPhone 3G S sports a new processor that should mean apps open more quickly than on previous models. It also now supports 7.2Mbps HSDPA for speedier Web browsing. Battery life seems to be an improvement on the iPhone 3G's. The resolution of the camera has been boosted to 3 megapixels, and it now has an autofocus feature, as well as video-recording capability. The voice-control feature lets you dial contacts, but also allows you to activate the iPod player by asking for a particular music track or artist. A digital compass has been added for souped-up location services

We don't like:

There's no doubt that the iPhone 3G S is an expensive smart phone. Because the jump from the iPhone 3G to the 3G S isn't quite as big as the jump from the first- to second-generation model, current 3G owners may be reluctant to upgrade

Microsoft has been working for a while on their home of the future. The house incorporates technology into various areas of life such as cooking.

Microsoft's home of the future can do may thing that we don't really see in traditionally homes. For one, the house can talk. Yes the house can talk to you, and take commands using voice recognition software. The house can also give you fashion advice, provide you with recipes in the kitchen, give you directions how to cook your meals and even remind you to take your medication.

Janet Galore, senior program manager of the Strategic Prototyping Group, gave BBC a look around some of the prototype features.

Surface, in case you need a reminder, is the Microsoft Vista-based platform that was formerly codenamed "PlayTable." The First commercial implementations of the Surface systems have already been deployed by hotels, casinos and cell-phone retailers.

Everytime you get a ticket, do you not always hope that there was a way to stop you from driving over the speed-limit? There is a software, which is still under going testing, that physically prevents your car from going over the speed limit. It is a clear cut method to not get caught speeding.

Transport for London is to try out a piece of software which stops motorists from going over the speed limit.Supporters says it will reduce deaths and injuries, but critics say it could hinder rather than help.

Nokia for the first time has released their very first Touchscreen phone. Considering its their first touchscreen phone, how is it compared something like the new Samsung Tocco Ultra.

The 5800 has video, music and GPS features to get the heart racing, but these are offset by a disappointing touch experience. There's nothing outrageously wrong with the 5800, but we're sure Nokia has better touchscreens to come. The Samsung Tocco Ultra on the other hand isslim and attractive and boasts a stunning AMOLED touchscreen display, and also includes a traditional alphanumeric keypad for those sent into wild fits of rage by using soft keyboards. The user interface could be more intuitive, but the Tocco Ultra is packed with features -- an 8-megapixel camera, GPS and HSDPA, for example -- that make it a very appealing device.

The new INQ1, by 3, definitely has a rather strange name, but the features that 3 packs with this mobile deal is absolutely amazing.

Man Delivers Baby Using Youtube!

'An engineer in Cornwall delivered his baby son after watching an instructional video on YouTube' as reported by BBC on May 2nd

Marc Stephens watched the videos as a precaution, when his wife started to feel some discomfort. Marc soon realised that he would not be able to get his wife to the hospital on time, and so Googled 'How to Deliver a baby.' He then used the youtube video from the search results to deliver the baby.

During an interview with Marc, he said, "I Googled how to deliver a baby, watched a few videos and basically swotted up."

Marc had been watching other videos about birth a few hours prior to actual conception. He said "The videos gave me peace of mind. I think I would have coped, but watching videos made things much easier."

The Delivery took place without any complications, and soon after birth, both child and mother was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske.

Windows 7 Release Candidate... It's Ready For You

Windows 7 has been released to the public, on 5th of May. The Downloadable version will be valid till January 2010, which is exactly when the Box copy of this new Version of Windows will be released to the Public.

Since the beta version was released, hundreds of testers from UK had tested it. They all came back with almost the same suggestions, 'I want it to be faster.' Amongst speed, contry specific wallpapers and screensavers were also common suggestions.

Windows 7 Features

• There will be a OSX-like dock, though how OS X-like is yet to be seen.

• Multi-touch gestures in photogalleries like two-finger zoom, flicking, and panning. Think of the photo app on the Microsoft Surface table.

• Multi-touch paint program where you can draw with 10 fingers (again, think of what you've already seen in Surface)

• Multi-touch piano app

• In-depth mapping application that pulls from Microsoft's Live Maps and Microsoft Virtual Earth

These features that are avilable are only demo versions, but full version will be available when teh box version comes out, which is in another 18 months.

Optical disc offers 500GB storage

General Electic has recently unveiled the new optical storage disc. A disc that can store upto 500 gigabytes (GB) of data, equivalent to 100 DVDs.

The micro-holographic disc, is the same size as an existing DVD disc. The company believe that it will be able to be used in consumer market place and in home players. Blue Ray dics, which are currently being used, can only hold maximum of 50GB. This new disc could revolutionize media as we know it.

a library of high definition movies but is there

pent-up consumer demand for such an offering?"

The main problem in this area of technology has been to increase the reflectivity of the holograms, which are stored on the disc. An increased reflectivity will enable players to both read and write on the disc.

"This is truly a breakthrough in the development of the materials that are so critical to ultimately bringing holographic storage to the everyday consumer," said Mr Lawrence.

This Optical disc could significantly change the way we watch movies or play games. The quality of movies and graphics could be immensly enhanced.
